Case studies
How CleanCo is supporting BHP to transition to more sustainable energy use.
BHP is among the world’s top producers of major commodities with significant mining operations in Queensland.
Through a five-year firm renewable power purchasing agreement with CleanCo, BHP will meet half of its electricity needs across its Queensland Coal mines from low emissions sources, including solar and wind.
For the first two years, power will be contracted from CleanCo’s low emissions portfolio which includes hydro and gas generation assets. From late 2022, the newly operational Western Downs Green Power Hub solar farm is expected to progressively contribute up to almost half the electricity requirements.
The agreement will help BHP reduce emissions from electricity use in its Queensland operations by 50 per cent by 2025, based on FY2020 levels.

How CleanCo is supporting Coles’ commitment to be Australia’s most sustainable supermarket
Through a 10 year agreement with CleanCo, more than 90% of Coles’ Queensland electricity requirements will be met with firmed clean energy.
The deal will reduce Coles’ electricity carbon dioxide emissions nationally by an estimated 20% or 240,000 tonnes annually – the equivalent of taking 100,000 vehicles off the road.
Coles will purchase 400 GWh of electricity annually through the agreement with the Western Downs Green Power Hub and MacIntyre Wind Farm to supply three quarters of Coles’ electricity requirements, and the remainder to be supported by CleanCo’s low emissions portfolio.
