SWANBANK ENERGY PRECINCT

CleanCo is working with the Ipswich community to transform our Swanbank site into an Energy Precinct, ensuring long-term jobs and economic opportunities for the region. The 336ha site has played an important role in supporting Queensland’s resource and energy supply for more than 50 years. Swanbank has a proud history of coal mining and coal generation – now its future is in sustainable, lower-emission energy.

Our Swanbank site has a grid connection capacity of up to 1.2GW and is located just outside Queensland’s largest energy demand centre, Brisbane, making it ideally suited to new energy production.

The precinct combines operational assets such as the Swanbank E Power Station and the new Swanbank Battery with emerging energy projects and community initiatives that support local employment, education and environmental restoration.

Collaborating with the community

The future of our Swanbank site is being shaped with input from the local community. In 2023, we codesigned a Community Infrastructure Masterplan with Ipswich residents. This Masterplan identified the area around Swanbank Lake as the top priority for renewal. Work is now underway to refresh the space with new and improved facilities. Read more about our community projects.

We also established the Swanbank Community Reference Group (CRG) in 2024 to provide ongoing feedback, ensuring community voices are at the heart of Swanbank’s transformation. Learn more about our CRG and meet the members.

Swanbank E Combined Cycle Gas-fired Power Station

Since 2002, Swanbank has hosted the highly efficient combined cycle gas-fired Swanbank E, generating 385MW of lower emission energy. Swanbank E is an important firming asset, supplying electricity at times of peak demand. Read about our Swanbank E gas-fired power station.

Swanbank Battery

Our portfolio at Swanbank now includes a 250MW/500MWh lithium-ion battery. Swanbank Battery is the first grid-scale battery in Ipswich and the first project to be completed as part of our redevelopment of the Swanbank site. The 138-module battery can discharge energy for up to two hours. The battery is currently being commissioned and is planned to become operational in Q1, 2026. Learn more about Swanbank Battery.

New Energy Projects

In 2023, CleanCo announced plans to develop the former coal-fired power station site into a precinct featuring lower-emission energy generation and storage technologies. We also committed to restoring the environment, including legacy issues from the site’s coal-fired era.

After a market sounding exercise in 2023, we are now exploring new energy technologies for the site.

Expanding gas-fired generation

CleanCo is investigating additional fast start, flexible gas-fired assets at our Swanbank site. Options for 250MW of additional energy generation capacity are being considered.
